Shishigatani Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata)
Shishigatani Pumkin (Cucurbita moschata): a real rarity from 19th century Japan, a small pumpkin of great flavour. The fruits are shaped as an hourglass, the skin is a bit warty, of an intense green colour while developing, and a beautiful pink when ripe. The pulp is compact, not very fibrous; it is sweet, and has a nutty flavour, a bit like a hazelnut. This pumpkin is very important in Shojin Ryori cuisine, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
It does not have particular demands for soil or irrigation; the plant is not vigorous and the fruits do not exceed 3kg. However, it is important to note that, as with all cucurbits, a good supply of phosphorus and potassium helps improving the taste.
