  • Bailan White Melon (Cucumis melo L.): An interesting variety grown near Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province in China. Imported in 1940 by United States Vice President Henry A. Wallace, avid gardener and plant lover,  it was well acclimated to the harsh climate of the area: low average temperatures, abundant summer rains.
Which renders it suitable for wetlands and early sowing thanks to its natural tolerance to more extreme temperatures, in comparison with other ecotypes of the species. It is a premature variety, providing fruits of about 1 -1.5 kg, of white skin that turns yellow when ripe. The pulp is aromatic, of a beautiful white/green colour, the texture is special because it is compact but not chewy, it is very sweet. It keeps well after harvest. The plant is
not particularly vigorous, which makes cultivation really simple, it requires only little care, so it is perfect even for beginners.
