Purple Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa)
Purple Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa):from Mexico, a really interesting species. A bushy plant with beautiful green leaves that reaches a height of about one meter, and is very productive, it provides many green fruits the size of a tomato, to which they resemble in shape. The tomatillo is wrapped in a paper-like skin, which protects them until maturation. Its acid taste makes it a great ingredient for delicious sauces which offer many new culinary ideas towards new flavours. It is grown like the tomato but lacks the flowers, therefore it is necessary to have more plants for pollination. It cannot stand frost and it is advisable to transplant it when temperatures are milder. The plant is rustic and very resistant to phytopathologies and parasites. It is useful to provide it with extra support because of the weight of the fruit. The purple tomatillo is less acidic than the other varieties and contains anthocyanins just like the blueberries.
